Kyoto Sanga leaks data of over 15,000 fans: A governance gap in Japanese football

Japanese football has long been admired for its meticulousness and professionalism. But recently, Kyoto Sanga FC, a J1 League club, has raised alarm when it confirmed a data breach affecting 15,612 fan club members. The incident started with an email mistakenly sent to an external partner, exposing a wide range of personal information. The club quickly requested deletion of the file, reported to Japan's Personal Information Protection Commission (PPC), and began notifying affected members from September 4. A dedicated information management committee was also formed to prevent recurrence. While the club acted swiftly, the long-term impact on fan trust and potential regulatory fines could be substantial. This case offers critical lessons for Vietnamese football as it continues to digitize fan data and professionalize club operations. Governance and data security must become priorities for any modern football club, on and off the pitch.
