The 11.2 Billion Dong Trail: Unpacking Financial Irregularities in Vietnam's Traditional Martial Arts

On March 12, 2026, a three-page unsigned PDF arrived in my inbox with the subject “Appendix 2 – Sponsorship Contract for the 2026 Binh Dinh Traditional Martial Arts Championship.” At the bottom of page two, a line had been blacked out. The email server backup still preserved the original text: a company name, a bank account, and an effective date. The more striking detail was the metadata: the file had been modified at 11:47 PM on July 20, 2026, exactly one night before the meeting that announced the event’s main sponsors. A clean contract has one page. A tainted contract has an appendix. In three years of tracking financial irregularities in martial arts tournaments, all I needed to start an investigation was one bank statement. The public budget for the 2026 tournament was 23.4 billion dong, the highest in three years. But a leaked bank statement showed 39 transfers totaling 11.2 billion dong to three companies sharing the same phone number in their tax registrations. One of those companies had been declared inactive by the tax authority in July 2026, before the official contract was signed. The tournament organizer explained that the companies were local media vendors using shared accounting services. He blamed the late invoices on slow staff. But a review of 2,341 VAT invoices found 17 invoices issued after the tax authority had confirmed a company had ceased operations. Their average value was 164.7 million dong, 2.4 times higher than the event average. None of them were accompanied by any acceptance report. A deeper check revealed that 5.9 billion dong came from secondary sponsors not named in the public announcement. One sponsor denied making a cash transfer, yet the bank statement showed a cash deposit from a personal account under the company's brand. The event’s internal payroll also showed 1.7 billion dong in “responsibility allowances” paid to 11 staff positions, although only 6 people were officially employed and those employees said they never received the allowances. None of these findings by themselves prove fraud. The organizer has the right to explain. But when I asked for the list of staff who received the allowances and the acceptance reports for the 17 invoices, the requests were denied. The tournament might have been clean on the mat, but the financial system behind it is not transparent enough to know where the money really went. The next tournament season begins in 2026. Without mandatory disclosure of contract appendices and independent audits, the same story will be repeated elsewhere. I will keep watching the ledger, not just the athletes.
